Owning your own business is not for everyone. Just because you’re a great cook does not mean that you should open your own restaurant. Just because you bake amazing cakes does not mean you should open up a bakery.
Owning your own business takes a lot of work, discipline, money and dedication. It is not for everyone.
As you begin this process you should know that every business has its share of risk. While the rewards can be amazing, the work is always hard and there is always uncertainty.
Ask yourself:
- Are you disciplined enough to work without supervision?
- Can you manage your own time?
- Do you get along with others?
- Can you start, complete and follow through with projects?
- Can you multi-task and accomplish many things at once?
- Are you a good supervisor and/or manager?
- Do you keep track of your personal finances?
- Can you read a financial statement?
- Are you willing to work nights and weekends?
- Are you physically and emotionally in shape to deal with stress of your business?
- Can you manage inventory or schedules or projects?
- Are you disciplined to plan when necessary?
- Is your family supportive of the idea of you owning your own business?
- Are you willing to lower your standard of living?
